Eco-Tours Cameroon: Birding, Trekking, Fishing, & Wildlife (Ref: GBT801CM)

Day 01: Douala

Arrive at Douala International airport, received by our local representative, transfer for checkin at Hotel Bano for dinner and overnight.

Day 02 - 03: Douala – Bamenda Highlands

Pickup early in the morning after breakfast for departure to Belo (a small town about 70km away from Bamenda) via the Bamenda highlands which is only a remnant of the former glory when Gerald Durrell first visited the area and wrote about it in his books the “Bafut Beagles” and the “Overloaded Ark”. The area was a solid rainforest, now the birds cling to tiny forest patches for survival.

Arrive in Belo and trek up to the Ijim mountain forest (the largest remaining mountain forest area in the Bamenda Highlands) where we will go for the rare and highly-sought after local Bannerman’s Turaco tracking (a bird species found only in this rain forest and nowhere else in the world), the Fernando Po Swift, Banded Wattle-eye, Bangwa Forest Warbler, Green Long tail, Cameroon Pipit, Cameroon Sunbird and Bannerman’s Weaver. Other great birds we will look for in this region are Western Green Tinker bird, Green-backed Woodpecker, Black-collared and Grey Apalis, Newman’s Starling, Brown-capped Weaver and Thick-billed Canary.

We later return to Bamenda to spend the night at Mondial Hotel. (BLD)

Days 04 - 05: Bamenda – South West (Mt. Kupe)

We drive from Bamenda through agricultural lands to the foot of Mt. Kupe where we shall spend two nights at the village of Nyasoso in tents. Mt. Kupe and the close-by Bokossi Mountains are covered mostly in pristine forest, the latter on more gentle slopes and only recently explored. The area holds some of West Africa’s most wanted birds, many of which are listed as endangered and threatened.

We shall go after the following bird species at Mt. Kupe: White-throated Mountain Babbler, Green-breasted and Montiero’s Bush-shrikes, Ursula’s Sunbird and Bate’s Weaver. Other species we will search for are Cassin’s Hawk-eagle, Pied and White-crested Hornbills, Naked-faced, Bristle-nosed, Yellow-spotted and Yellow-billed Barbets, Brown-eared, Gabon and Elliot’s Woodpecker, Sabine’s Spinetail, Forest Swallow and Square-tailed saw-wing, Black-throated and Black-capped Apalis, Tit and Green Hylia, Black Bee-eater, Bare-cheeked and Bar-tailed Trogon, a host of greenbuls, warblers and flycatchers and many more weavers, twinspots, negroficnhes and waxbills.

The area is home to 14 species of primates and we might encounter Drills and Chimpanzees in the deep forest. (BLD)

Day 06: Mount Kupe – Mundemba

From Mt. Kupe we’ll drive to Mundemba, where we will access the legendary Korup National Park. Roadside birding can be very productive, and we’ll make numerous stops. We may see our first Spotted Greenbul, White-thighed or Piping hornbills, Black-headed Waxbill or Long-legged Pipit. Overnight in Mundemba. (BLD)

Day 07 - 08: Mundemba - Korup National Park

We have two full days to explore the lowlands of Korup National Park. This vast wilderness area offers an excellent opportunity to view Red-headed Picathartes, which will be our main target species, and we will have to spend one night camped deep in the forest in order to be at the cave where these birds roost in the evening and early morning. We will also see numerous species of Greenbuls and other forest Green-tailed and Common bristlebills, Black-capped and Pale-breasted Illadopsises and the diminutive Forest Robin. Other highlights may include Blue Cuckooshrike, Black-casqued, Yellow-casqued and Red-billed Dwarf hornbills, Bare-cheeked Trogon and Blue-headed Wood Dove. Overnights in Camp (BLD).

Day 09: Korup National Park – Buea (Mount Cameroon)

After some early morning birding we transfer to the town of Buea, at the foot of Mount Cameroon. The better part of the afternoon and most of the next day will be spent on the mountain and we hope to find several of the mountain’s endemic specials, although this will entail a lot of stiff climbing if we are to get the Mount Cameroon Speirops, or have a slight chance of the Mount Cameroon Francolin. But other species may include the endemic Little Oliveback, Cameroon Olive and Western Montane greenbuls, and Cameroon Mountain Robin, dinner and night in Buea.

Day 10: Buea - Yaoundé

Early morning after breakfast, we drive to Douala and continue to Senaga River at Edea where we should find Grey Pratincoles and African skimmers, later we drive to Yaoundé. Upon arrival, dinner and overnight at Hotel Azur.

Day 11: Yaoundé – Ebogo Ecotourism Site

Early morning after breakfast, drive to visit Ebogo, a magical site located in a quiet green of the rainforest that offers visitors various attractions, including canoe rides on the river Nyong, the discovery of the “big 300 years old tree” measuring about 12 meters in diameter, the capture of a variety of butterflies, traditional fishing of various fish species, trekking in the forest on the nature trail, watching of wild birds including parrots gathered together on an island, etc. Later in the evening, we shall return to a hotel in Yaoundé for dinner and overnight.

Day 12: Yaoundé – Kribi – Lobe Falls – Beach

After beakfast we depart to Kribi via the Lobe waterfalls (the only place in the world where a waterfall enters the Atlantic Ocean through a water cascade), At Kribi we shall visit one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with fine and golden sand that will provide you with smooth and pleasing feelings, relax on the beach, and later checkin at Hotel Tara Plage for dinner and overnight.
